Rob Dyrdek is a professional skateboarder, actor and entrepreneur.
MTV viewers know Dyrdek from his starring role in the reality series Rob and Big, which aired on the music cabler from November 2006 to April 2008, and now Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory, which premiered earlier this year.
But Dyrdek is about to make a splash on the big screen with Street Dreams, a feature film hitting theaters June 12, 2009.
Street Dreams revolves around Derrick Cabrera (Paul Rodriguez Jr.), a skater who dreams of being sponsored--and one day going pro. But while the up and coming skater has all the talent, the world seems against him. His parents, friends and schoolmates can't understand how Derrick has so much passion for something that, in their eyes, has no future.
Dyrdek wrote, produced and financed Street Dreams, which boasts a cast of professional skateboarders, including Dyrdek, Paul Rodriquez, Ryan Sheckler, Terry Kennedy and Ryan Dunn.
MovieTickets.com talked to the skateboard mogul about the movie, his show, his upcoming tour and his passion: skateboarding.
MovieTickets.com: You helped write the script for Street Dreams. Is any of it based on personal experience? Was your family supportive of your dream to skate?
Rob Dyrdek: There is so much in the film that is based off of my personal experiences. My parents didn't mind me skateboarding but really wanted me to finish high school and go to college. "Your education is something you can always fall back on" is a line from the movie that is word for word out of my mother's mouth. I chose skateboarding over school ... it ended up working out all right!
MovieTickets.com: In skateboarding, a new trick can bring instant stardom. Derrick has a trick in Street Dreams. What is it and does it have a name?
Rob: The trick is a 360 Flip Crooked Grind Down a Handrail. We knew we had to give it a name since the trick was a mouthful. My character, who is a bit of a hater, decides to name the trick "The N.A.C," for Not A Chance.
MovieTickets.com: Speaking of tricks, you've set some Guinness World Records! Can you tell us about them?
Rob: I currently have 22 World Records. That does sound cool, but anyone with a bit of skateboarding skills could have beaten all those records. Except, of course, the 36-foot skateboard will probably last forever.
MovieTickets.com: You will be crossing the U.S. for your DC Fantasies Run Deep Tour, which is presented by Street Dreams, this month. What do you hope to accomplish with the tour?
Rob: It's just a really great opportunity for me to get out and meet a lot fans as well as a bring awareness to the film. Click here for DC Fantasies Run Deep Tour dates.
MovieTickets.com: Fans who catch the tour are also in for a special treat, right?
Rob: We will be doing special private screenings of the film in each city so some lucky people will have a chance to see it early.
MovieTickets.com: Street Dreams' big Hollywood premiere happens June 8. Do you have any surprises in store for the red carpet? Are you taking Meaty and Beefy?
Rob: Nothing crazy planned at this point. I mean, come on--the last thing I want to do is be cleaning up Beefy doo-doo on the red carpet!
MovieTickets.com: As an entrepreneur, you've launched companies including Silver Trucks, Reflex Bearings and Rogue Status, a street wear line co-owned with drummer Travis Barker, founded the Street League skateboarding league, and developed the Wild Grinders cartoon and toy line. You've also formed a charitable foundation to build skate plazas around the country so kids have a safe place to skate. Why is this cause so important to you?
Rob: It is simply the reality that there are very few legal places built for skaters. And even a smaller percentage of those are built properly. I truly love skateboarding and the future of skateboarding relies on having the proper places to skate.
MovieTickets.com: You've accomplished so much. Are you content or are there more projects on the horizon?
Rob: That is a funny question--I feel like I'm just getting started. So many projects ... it's hard for me to see the horizon!
MovieTickets.com: We know you buy your movie tickets online (wink wink). What are your Top 5 favorite movies?
Rob: 1) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 2) Heat 3) Borat 4) Dumb and Dumber and 5) Goodfellas.
Come back soon to participate in MovieTickets.com's Street Dreams Sweepstakes for a chance to win a skateboarder's dream prize package! And be sure to check out MTV Star and Pro Skateboarder Rob Dyrdek Debuts Street Dreams for more about the movie.
