The ABCs of the Holiday Movie Season

Thanksgiving, celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November, is a time to gather with family and friends, feast, and give thanks for life's many blessings. For moviegoers, it's also the launch of the holiday movie season, when some of the year's most buzzed-about films are released.

So what does the 2008 holiday movie season have in store? Let our ABCs of the Holiday Movie Season guide you through the 35 days between Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day.

Marley & Me
A for Aniston… Jennifer Aniston

Based on the bestseller Marley & Me, Jenny (Jennifer Aniston) and hubby John Grogan (Owen Wilson), two ambitious young reporters, buy a house in Florida and adopt a Labrador puppy, Marley, who quickly becomes a rollicking force of nature in their lives.

Bedtime Stories
B for Bedtime Stories

Bedtime Stories stars funnyman Adam Sandler as Skeeter Bronson, a hotel handyman whose life is changed forever when the bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to mysteriously come true.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
C for the Curious Case of Benjamin Button

In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Brad Pitt stars as Benjamin Button, a man who is born in his 80s and ages backwards. Set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, the movie follows Benjamin's unusual life journey. The movie also reunites Pitt with his Babel co-star Cate Blanchette.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
D for the Day the Earth Stood Still

Keanu Reeves stars in The Day the Earth Stood Still, a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic which sees aliens land on Earth with a message for all humans: Live in peace or be destroyed!

Cadillac Records
E for Emmanuelle Chriqui

Emmanuelle Chriqui joins stars Adam Brody and Beyoncé Knowles in Cadillac Records about the rise and fall of Chess Records, which launched the careers of Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry. Oscar-winner Brody plays Leonard Chess, who scoured the South for different blues scenes and sold records from the back of his Cadillac.

Coraline
F for Fanning... Dakota Fanning

In Coraline, a young girl (Dakota Fanning) walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life--only much better. But when this wondrously off-kilter adventure turns dangerous, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home.

Four Christmases
G for Gordon... Seth Gordon

The director of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters brings us Four Christmases. The holiday comedy stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as an upscale, happily unmarried San Francisco couple whose exotic vacation plans get by fog on Christmas morning, and are forced instead to attend four relative-choked festivities.

Last Chance Harvey
H for Hoffman… Dustin Hoffman

In Last Chance Harvey, New Yorker Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman), an unemployed jingle writer, meets Kate (Emma Thompson), a sensitive, 40-something employee of the Office of National Statistics. The two develop an unlikely connection and unexpectedly transform one another’s lives.

Che
I for IFC Films

IFC Films releases Che Part 1: The Argentine, a biographical film on the latter years of Che Guevara, the controversial South American revolutionary who was murdered by the Bolivian army in 1967. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film stars Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro.

Nothing Like the Holidays
J for John Leguizamo

John Leguizamo and Feddy Rodriguez star as siblings in the holiday movie Nothing Like the Holidays. The Christmastime comedy revolves around the far-flung members of the Rodriguez family, who are converging at their parents’ home in Chicago to celebrate the season and rejoice in their youngest brother’s safe return from combat overseas.

Revolutionary War
K for Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet reunites with her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road. Set in the 1950s, the period drama focuses on a husband and wife living in suburban Connecticut who are dissatisfied with life. They move to France, where their relationship deteriorates into an endless cycle of squabbling, jealousy and recriminations.

Defiance
L for Liev Schrieber

Liev Schreiber and Daniel Craig headline Defiance, about four Jewish brothers living in Nazi occupied Poland who escape into the forest where they join up with Russian resistance fighters in battling the Nazis. The film is based on a true story.

Milk
M for Milk

In Milk, Sean Penn stars as Harvey Milk, an activist, politician, and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America. In 1978, Milk--along with the city's mayor George Moscone (Victor Garber)--was shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White, after a year in office. The political biopic also stars Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch and James Franco.

Australia
N for Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman star in Australia, the racy outback epic which takes place from the mid-1930s leading up to the Japanese bombing of the tropical northern city of Darwin in World War II.

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!
O for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!

Set in the inner city ghetto of West Delhi,Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! revolves around Lucky, a gawky 15-year-old lower middle class Sikh kid who rises to become one of the most wanted master thieves of India with tens of millions worth of loot, a glamorous lifestyle, cars, women, and a fan following.

The Spirit
P for Plaster of Paris, Silken Floss, Sand Serif…

These are all characters from the comic book actioner The Spirit, which stars Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Gabriel Macht and Eva Mendes. The movie revolves around a detective who prevents an attempt to release a substance that will leave the citizens of Central City in suspended animation. He is also exposed to the goo, which gives him the ability to withstand any beating--and battles crime and a slew of femme fatales.

Quantum of Solace
Q for Quantum of Solace

This latest James Bond flick opened prior to the official start of the holiday season, but it has to be mentioned, because if you haven't yet seen this 21st installment of the 007 franchise yet, use your holiday down time to do so! In Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig returns as Bond, who must infiltrate a drug ring flooding Britain with heroin. Judi Dench also returns as M.

Punisher: War Zone
R for Ray Stevenson

Ray Stevenson takes over the reigns as Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone. This time around, Castle, a Marine-turned-vigilante, takes on a New York mobster. Stevenson, who starred as Titus Pullo in HBO's hit series Rome, takes the Punisher franchise over from Thomas Jane, but it's not an official sequel to the 2004 film directed by Jonathan Hensleigh.

Doubt
S for Streep… Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams star in Doubt. Set in 1964, the film centers on a nun who suspects a priest of abusing a black student. He denies the charges, and much of the play's quick-fire dialogue tackles themes of religion, morality and authority.

Transporter 3
T for Transporter 3

In Transporter 3, Jason Statham is back as ex-Special Forces operative Frank Martin, who's been hired by a criminal mastermind to go on a mission to deliver a 'package.' In this third installment, Martin's rules three rules (never change the deal, no names, and never look in the package) are all the same--except for one. Francois Berleand also returns as French cop Tarconi.

 Tale of Despereaux
U for Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures releases the animated feature Tale of Despereaux, featuring Matthew Broderick as the voice of Despereaux, a rat who will teach a kingdom that it takes only a little light to show that what you look like doesn't equal what you are. The movie was animated using traditional hand-drawn cells.

Valkyrie
V for Valkyrie

In Valkyrie, Tom Cruise stars a Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Adolf Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler's own emergency plan--known as Operation Valkyrie--he joins the German resistance's plots to assassinate the dictator and over-throw his Nazi government.

Seven Pounds
W for Will Smith

Will Smith stars in Seven Pounds as Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers. Connor Cruise (Tom Cruise's son) makes his acting debut as the young Ben Thomas.

Extreme Movie
X for Extreme Movie

Extreme Movie, a comedy about the sex adventures of six teenager friends, stars Frankie Muniz, Michael Cera and Ryan Pinkston. The film was formerly called "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Teen Sex... But Were Afraid to Ask, Parental Guidance Suggested."

Ciao
Y for Yen Tan

In Ciao, a man dies very unexpectedly and leaves behind two men: Jeff, his best friend and Andrea, an Italian he's been corresponding with online. What began as a tragedy that linked two strangers from different ends of the world becomes a deeply realized friendship that may change their lives forever.

Z for Zooey Deschannel
