The Idea of You

Hathaway is a talent no matter what she’s in, and Nicholas Galitzine is one to watch. Together, they make what should be an unbearable cringe-fest a convincing and rather enjoyable experience.

The Idea of You is fizzy and diverting, and falls into the “it’s mostly fine” box, but it lacks oomph in its execution. It’s only half a seduction.

I liked Anne Hathaway in it and found it tolerable, but basically it's a harlequin dramedy.

The Idea of You is directed with breezy affection and confidence by the always reliable Michael Showalter . No, it doesn’t have the snappy cleverness of Notting Hill -- what does? -- but it should appeal to folks craving an intelligent and sexy romcom.

The Idea of You is off-key. Each touching or funny moment is dulled down by a story that feels unrehearsed. Performances fall flat, and it feels like the last days of any boy band with infighting.

The first part of the film presents the characters sympathetically and effectively, but the twists and turns that are supposed to mark their relationship never come across as credible or meaningful.

The Idea of You does not do much to set itself apart from the hundreds of other romantic comedies out there, but Hathaway’s marvellous lead performance is reason enough to give it a watch when the opportunity presents itself.

The chemistry is there despite the age difference and there's lots of pretty people in pretty places falling in love

Does The Idea of You work as pure escapist fantasy? Sure. As a rom-com? Less so.
