Breaking Dawn--the fourth movie in the Twilight franchise--could be split into two installments, to be shot back to back. The obstacle, however, may be getting the Twilight stars and New Moon director Chris Weitz on board the double feature train without breaking the bank.
According to Variety.com, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are only signed up for four films, which means Summit Entertainment would need to negotiate new deals with the stars for a fifth Twilight movie.
Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner were unknown stars when they signed on to the four books. But with New Moon raking in $231 million in its first two weeks of release in North America, the stars could well command salaries in the hefty eight-figure range.
Then there's Weitz. While Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner have all sung the director's praises, Weitz recently said he wants to quit showbiz after completing his next project, The Gardener.
Weitz told Entertainment Weekly last week that while he would like to direct another Twilight film, the idea of the mandatory worldwide PR tour left him saying, "I just think I would die."
But a report in Variety suggests Breaking Dawn is Weitz's if he wants it, although no official offer has been made.
Both films would likely be penned by screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who wrote the first three Twilight adaptations.
But first, novelist Stephenie Meyer, whose Breaking Dawn is the final novel in the Twilight vampire series, must approve the two-movie decision.
Both Meyer's and Rosenberg would also require major compensation bumps.
Stay tuned for further updates.
