TYLER PERRY TO PRODUCE NEW SHOWS FOR OPRAH WINFREY NETWORK
Tuesday, October 2, 2012 - Filmmaker Tyler Perry has signed a lucrative new deal with Oprah Winfrey to produce a series of programmes exclusively for her OWN cable network.
The pals previously teamed up to produce Lee Daniels' Oscar-winning 2009 film Precious and they are working together again to create original shows for Winfrey's channel.
Perry will premiere two new scripted series on OWN next year and the network will be the "singular destination" for all of his future TV projects, although his current comedy shows - House of Payne, Meet the Browns and For Better or Worse - will continue to air on rival cable company Tbs.
A statement released by Winfrey reads, "I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come. We are all energised by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly
successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life
stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world."
And in a post on his website, Perry adds: "Oprah and I have joined forces. We've formed a partnership for OWN and I'm super excited about it. I'll fill you in more as we get closer to the airing of my shows. I have a lot of questions for you about this, so stay close, Ok? I need your help."
It is hoped the new multi-year Perry deal will boost interest in the struggling Oprah Winfrey Network, which has battled to attract audiences since its launch in January, 2011.
