BRIDGE IN THE BAHAMAS TO BE NAMED AFTER SIDNEY POITIER
Thursday, October 11, 2012 - Revered actor Sidney Poitier is to be handed a bridge honor in the Bahamas.
Poitier, who became the first African American to win an Oscar for Best
Actor in 1964 for his role in Lilies of the Field, spent much of his childhood on Cat Island, a small piece of land which makes up the nation to the east of Florida.
And, as a tribute to the 80 year old, Prime Minister Perry Christie will rename the Paradise Island Bridge in his honor during a special ceremony next month (Nov12), when the country marks its 40th anniversary as an independent state.
