FORMER BBC BOSS ALEXANDER MILNE DEAD AT 82

Thursday, January 10, 2013 - Former BBC director general Alexander Milne has died, aged 82.

The former TV producer ran the network from 1982 to 1987, when he was asked to step down during a BBC overhaul and following decisions to greenlight

controversial news shows about the Falklands War and the U.S. bombing of Libya.

Milne upset many U.K. politicians in 1985 when he agreed to air a news special featuring an interview with Sinn Fein leader Martin McGuinness. Officials called on the BBC not to screen the program and network governors agreed.

Among his many successes, Milne oversaw the historic Live Aid broadcast in 1985.
