JIM CARREY ISSUES APOLOGY TO GUN OWNERS FOR BAD LANGUAGE IN ONLINE RANTS
Monday, July 08, 2013 - Comedian Jim Carrey has issued an apology to pro-gun advocates for calling them names, almost a year after branding them "maniacs" in a Twitter.com tirade following the cinema massacre in Denver, Colorado.
The Mask star made his stance against weapons ownership known in the days
after gunman James Holmes walked into a packed movie theater in Aurora last July and opened fire during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 film fans and injuring 59 others.
Taking to the micro-blogging site, he wrote, "My love to the victims in Colorado. The kid ws (was) sick but u who can still support automatic weapon
sales r the real maniacs in this country (sic)."
Earlier this year , he went on to release a spoof video about firearms regulations in the U.S., called Cold Dead Hand, in which he portrayed figures including late National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston to
warn viewers of the dangers of gun ownership.
Sharing the video with fans on Twitter, he stated: "Cold Dead Hand is abt
(about) u heartless mother%kers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids (sic). Sorry if you're offended."
However, Carey has since decided to make amends with gun owners for his choice of language during his online rants, although he insists his opinion on weapons has not changed.
In a tweet to followers on Sunday night (07Jul13), he wrote, "Asslt (assault) rifle fans, I do not agree with u, nor do I fear u but I do love u and
I'm sorry that in my outrage I called you names. That was wrong.
"Btw (by the way) I don't need a crisis mgr (manager), just a conscience.
Calling ppl (people) names is inappropriate but my position on assault weapons hasn't changed... Only love is cool."
Carrey's unusual apology comes just two weeks after he withdrew support for his new movie Kick-Ass 2 amid concerns the onscreen violence is inappropriate in the aftermath of the Connecticut school massacre in December .
