ENDURANCE ATHLETE DIANA NYAD SPEAKS AFTER RECORD-BREAKING SWIM
Monday, September 2, 2013 - Athlete Diana Nyad has urged the elderly to chase their dreams after becoming the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage.
The 64 year old reached the beach in Key West on Monday (02Sep13), 54 hours after beginning the sea trek on Saturday (31Aug13) - her fifth attempt at the gruelling marathon.
Surrounded by supporters and well wishers as she returned to dry land, exhausted Nyad said, "I've got three messages. One is we should never ever give up, and two is you're never too old to chase your dreams; three is it looks like a solitary sport but it's a team (effort)."
The endurance swimmer's amazing feat earned her a tweet from U.S. leader President Barack Obama, who wrote, "Congratulations to @DianaNyad. Never give up on your dreams."
