Wednesday, January 22, 2014 - Argentine soccer legend Osvaldo Ardiles is recovering in hospital after suffering head injuries in a car crash.

The World Cup-winning star was shooting a documentary in the Falkland Islands about the 1982 conflict there when the vehicle he was traveling in overturned on Saturday (18Jan14).

It is believed Ardiles, who was driving the car, had swerved to avoid a sheep.

He was airlifted to a hospital to receive treatment for severe cuts to his head.

Fellow former Argentine international, Ricardo Villa, who was also in the

vehicle, suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital on Monday (20Jan14).

In a message to fans from his hospital bed, Ardiles - who won soccer's World Cup with Argentina in 1978 - said, "Thank you to everyone in the islands who has helped, without exception... Thank you to everyone for your concern, I am fine and going well."
