Friday, April 18, 2014 - Beloved Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez has died in Mexico.

The Nobel Prize winner passed away on Thursday at his home in Mexico City at the age of 87.

He was admitted to the National Medical Sciences and Nutrition Institute on March 31, suffering from dehydration linked to lung and urinary tract infections, but he was discharged last week.

The writer, a former journalist, was best known for his novels One Hundred Years of Solitude, Autumn of the Patriarch and Love in the Time of Cholera, which was adapted into 2007 film, starring Javier Bardem.

He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982.

Marquez, who former U.S. leader Bill Clinton called his "literary hero", was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1999 and, in 2012, his brother Jaime revealed the writer was battling dementia.
