Shazam! Director to Cast Two Actors for Superhero Role
Aug 29, 2017 by: WENN
Director David F. Sandberg is on the hunt for two actors to share the role of Shazam! as the grown superhero and his child alter ego.
The Annabelle: Creation filmmaker isn't interested in relying on modern technology to shave years off an adult actor's features onscreen, and instead plans to recruit two males to portray DC Comics character Billy Batson, a boy who transforms himself into a fully-grown man with superhuman strength just by uttering the word "Shazam!"
Sandberg discussed the advances in computer-generated imagery to de-age characters like Kurt Russell's Ego, the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, but admitted he doesn't think it would work well enough for his upcoming project.
"They've done quite well, I mean Kurt Russell in the latest Guardians was really well made, I thought, but I think there's a limit to it as well," he mused to Collider.com. "You probably can't do (de-age) someone to be a kid. Why create that hassle for yourself?"
"I wouldn't want to do that," he continued of his own plans for Shazam!. "That seems like way too much of a hassle. So I think it's just kind of best to have a kid and an adult (share the role)."
A potential release date for the Warner Bros. movie has yet to be announced, but Sandberg reveals he will begin production on the blockbuster imminently--even though full casting details have so far been kept under wraps.
Only Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has been officially announced for the movie, in which he will portray the villain, Black Adam.
The Furious 7 star previously hinted he wanted Armie Hammer to play Shazam, but it is not known if The Man From U.N.C.L.E. actor was actually offered the part of the adult superhero.
