Leonardo DiCaprio Executive Producing Environmental Documentary
Sep 5, 2017 by: WENN
Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to executive produce documentary Silas.
The film centers on Liberian environmental activist Silas Siakor, who is leading the fight against illegal logging in the country.
Anjali Nayar and Hawa Essuman have directed the documentary and it will be produced under The Great Gatsby star's Appian Way Productions. It will make its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with Appian Way on the film," a joint statement from producer Steve Markovitz and Nayar reads. "Their documentary work aligns perfectly with the spirit of our documentary."
DiCaprio is a strong supporter of environmental protection efforts and has produced several documentaries focusing on the subject including Before the Flood, The Ivory Game, A Plastic Ocean and Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret.
He has also donated more than $80 million through his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to environmental projects and charities and earlier this year he called on his famous friends to donate more ahead of his own ecological foundation's charity gala.
"In an age when governments are deadlocked in predictable, partisan rhetoric, it is up to every concerned individual to be a champion for our shared planet," The Revenant star said in a press release. "We can start by exponentially increasing the level of philanthropic giving to organizations that are defending our natural world, and calling on the global community to take action together."
He also recently donated $1 million to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
