Patty Jenkins Sets Record Deal for Wonder Woman 2

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has finalized her deal to take charge of Wonder Woman 2, making her the highest-paid female director ever.

The star of the first film, Gal Gadot, is already signed on to return for the sequel to the project, and although Patty had made no secret of her desire to direct Wonder Woman 2, there were sticking points during her negotiations.

Sources tell Variety the new deal to write, produce and direct the much anticipated sequel is reportedly worth about $8 million--the highest figure ever awarded to a woman.

Wonder Woman
has already broken other records among films directed by solo women--it chalked up the biggest U.S. opening weekend ever at $103.3 million, and the highest global box office earnings at $816.3 million as of September 11.

The film is not, however, the highest-grossing film directed by a woman. That honor still belongs to the 2013 musical juggernaut, Frozen, which was co-directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, and has earned $1.28 billion internationally.

Though specific details of Patty's new contract have not been been made public, they are thought to include a significant share of the proceeds. Back in August, bosses at Deadline reported that Patty and her representatives were shooting for a deal that would pay her "the same as a male director would receive after such a box office coup."

Patty has also released very little information about her vision for the sequel, although she told editors at BuzzFeed News in June that she was looking forward to seeing her titular heroine's "power really soar."

"That's what I'm craving," she added.

Wonder Woman 2 is due for release on December 13, 2019.
