'It' Scares Up a Second Week on Top of the Box Office

Creepy clown Pennywise has prevented Jennifer Lawrence's new thriller mother! and bloody action film American Assassin from debuting at the top of the North American  box office.

The latest adaptation of Stephen King's horror tale It has scored a second week at number one in North America, notching up another record with a domestic haul of $218.7 million.

The film is now the highest grossing September release of all time.

The scary movie, which features Bill Skarsgard as nightmare clown Pennywise, debuted last week with a sensational $123 million and scored the biggest opening for a horror movie, the biggest September debut and the second highest grossing start for an R-rated movie behind Deadpool.

It is also the biggest Stephen King movie adaptation. The previous record was held by 1999's The Green Mile, which featured Tom Hanks and the late Michael Clarke Duncan.

It director Andy Muschietti is already working on a sequel, which will pick up the story in the 1980s--three decades after the events in his new hit.

Dylan O'Brien‘s American Assassin picked up $14.8 million in its first weekend on release to debut at two, while Lawrence's new film, directed by her boyfriend Darren Aronofsky, opens in third place with a disappointing $7.5 million.

mother!, which was slammed by many critics and received a rare 'F' rating from CinemaScore, is a new low for Lawrence, becoming the worst wide-release opening of The Hunger Games star's career.

Reese Witherspoon's comedy Home Again and The Hitman's Bodyguard, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, round out the new Top 5.
