Spider-Man: Homecoming Becomes 2017's Highest Grossing Superhero Movie
Sep 25, 2017 by: WENN
Spider-Man: Homecoming has passed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the highest grossing superhero movie of 2017.
According to figures from BoxOfficemojo.com, the film, starring Tom Hollander as the titular web-slinging hero, has now made $874 million in cinemas worldwide, taking it past the $863 million made by its fellow Marvel movie.
However Spider-Man: Homecoming owes its financial success to mammoth takings in foreign markets as it's still only the third highest grossing comic book caper in North America.
Jon Watts' film only made $332 million in the U.S. and Canada, well behind the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel's $390 million, and the stellar $412 million made by America's top superhero film, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman.
Jenkins' movie and Spider-Man are both loved by critics as well as fans, as they both have a score of 92 per cent "fresh" on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
The two films may not end the year as the top earning superhero movies in the U.S. and the world however, as Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League are both set to debut later this year.
