Quentin Tarantino Taps the Revenant Screenwriter for Star Trek Movie

Quentin Tarantino has hired The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith to pen the script for his Star Trek movie.

Earlier this month, it was reported that that the Pulp Fiction filmmaker was making plans for another installment of the sci-fi franchise with J.J. Abrams at Paramount Pictures, who helmed 2009's Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness in 2013, before moving into the Star Wars universe with 2015's The Force Awakens for Disney.

Now, it appears Tarantino is making strides with the project, with editors at Deadline confirming that Smith has been tapped to write the screenplay.

The screenwriter wrote and directed 2006 film Seance, 2007's Vacancy and together with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, co-wrote critically acclaimed 2015 epic The Revenant, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Punke.

Although details on the new Star Trek story are currently being kept under wraps, it is believed the film will be based on an original idea Tarantino dreamed up several years ago.

"I'm not really interested in doing a sci-fi film, but there's one thing in particular that I would be interested in," he told Vulture back in 2015. "I can't tell you what it is, though, because I would literally be telling you exactly what it is. And then I wouldn't be able to do it, because everyone would talk about it, because it is one thing in particular."

No potential release date has been announced for the film, though it’s understood that Smith will focus on the script while Tarantino works on his next movie, a drama set in the late 1960s which focuses on the Charles Manson murders.
