John Mahoney Dead at 77

Frasier star John Mahoney has died, aged 77.

The beloved actor, who portrayed Frasier Crane's often-grumpy dad Martin on TV, passed away in a hospice in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday.

Mahoney played Martin Crane, opposite Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, for 11 seasons of Frasier, and picked up a Screen Actors Guild award in 2000 for portraying the character.

Born in Blackpool, England, Mahoney grew up in nearby Manchester but emigrated to the U.S. after visiting his sister, who married an American. He won his citizenship by serving in the U.S. Army.

He started acting late in life, encouraged by pal John Malkovich to give theater a try in his late 30s, and studied at the St. Nicholas Theater in his adopted Chicago.

He later joined Malkovich's Steppenwolf theater company. In 1986, Mahoney won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in John Guare's American Playhouse: The House of Blue Leaves.

He made his feature film debut in 1980 and appeared in the movies American President, Say Anything, and Eight Men Out.

Mahoney was also nominated for two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes.
