It Happened One Night Tops Critics' List for Best Romantic Comedy
Feb 14, 2018 by: WENN
Director Frank Capra's beloved 1934 movie It Happened One Night has topped a new critics list to find the Best Romantic Comedies for Valentine's Day.
The classic, starring Claudette Colbert as a spoiled heiress and Clark Gable as cynical newspaper reporter Peter Warne, beats out last year's The Big Sick, featuring comedian Kumail Nanjiani, to top the experts' Cupid countdown on streaming service FandangoNOW.
The Philadelphia Story (1940) comes in third, ahead of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck's Roman Holiday and 1941's The Lady Eve.
Woody Allen's Annie Hall, His Girl Friday, The Shop Around the Corner, The Princess Bride, and Marilyn Monroe movie Some Like It Hot complete the Top 10.
"It's always great to spend Valentine's week surrounded by laughs, love and a lighter touch - and you get that from all of these movies," Fandango managing editor Erik Davis tells WENN.
"It's also gratifying to see my new personal favorite, the Oscar-nominated The Big Sick, join the pantheon of all-time great romantic comedies."
The 1940s is clearly the most romantic decade for movies, according to the website's critics--three of the films featured in the Top 10 were released in 1940, while another hit theaters in 1941.
