Ansel Elgort Is the Favorite to Play Hans Christian Andersen in New Fantasy Musical

Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort is in early talks to front a new Hans Christian Andersen musical.
Studio bosses at Fox 2000 have just won a bidding war for Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz's new project, which will revolve around the beloved Danish writer.
David Magee, whose Mary Poppins Returns script has been turned into a major upcoming Disney movie, will pen the screenplay, while former Oscars bosses Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will produce.
Elgort has emerged as a favorite to star as Andersen, the man behind fairytales and folk stories like The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen, and The Ugly Duckling.
According to Deadline sources, the project will not be a biopic, but a musical fantasy, in which Andersen finds himself trapped in a world of his own imagination, where he meets characters from his books.
Magee and Schwartz pitched the movie idea and one of the completed original songs to 11 studios, according to the outlet, and received six firm offers.
Fox 2000 studio head Elizabeth Gabler, who is still enjoying the success of the company's holiday musical The Greatest Showman, beat out her rivals for the rights.
Elgort, who trained as a singer and dancer, is expected to sign up for the film within weeks, reports Deadline.
Song and dance man Danny Kaye most famously portrayed Hans Christian Andersen in the 1952 Charles Vidor movie musical of the same name. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role as the writer.
