Judd Apatow Teaching Online Comedy Classes
Mar 2, 2018 by: WENN
Director Judd Apatow is sharing his comedic skills with students in a series of online classes.
The filmmaker has countless classic comedies notched on his belt, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Amy Schumer's Trainwrecked, and he will now be teaching his techniques in a $90 course for Masterclass.
“I have been mentored by many great comedians in my life," Apatow writes in a statement to Deadline. "If someone out there watches this class and it’s helpful in their development as a comic mind, and they can create something that makes the world a happier place, then I did something that I can be proud of."
Apatow, who has seen his films nominated for Golden Globe trophies and Academy Awards in the the past, will "share lessons on how to create hilarious storylines, write great stand-up, and direct comedies that leave audiences laughing" with students in his first-ever online course. Students have the chance to learn his process firsthand through scene deconstructions and case studies. They will also learn inside tips about the film industry and get guidance on how to pitch ideas to film bosses from Judd.
Each class will be directed by filmmaker Jay Roach, the mastermind behind the Austin Powers franchise and Meet the Parents. Judd's Masterclass became open for pre-enrollment on Thursday (01Mar18).
Apatow, who is also a producer and comedic writer, is following in the path of previous Masterclass teachers such as singer Christina Aguilera, chef Gordon Ramsay, DJ deadmau5 and actress Helen Mirren.
