Octavia Spencer Buying Up Theater Tickets for Black Panther Screening
Feb 2, 2018 by: WENN
Octavia Spencer is planning to buy out a Mississippi cinema so underprivileged children can see much-hyped superhero movie Black Panther.
The film, which features a predominately black cast, opens later this month and the Hidden Figures star wants to give children of color an opportunity to see it first.
"I will be in (Mississippi) when this movie opens," she wrote on Instagram alongside a promotional picture from the film. "I think I will buy out a theater in an undeserved community there to ensure that all our brown children can see themselves as a superhero. I will let you know where and when Mississippi. Stay tuned. #KingsAndQueensWillRise."
This isn't the first time Spencer has rented out a theater for film fans--last year, she honored her late mother by treating low-income families in California to a screening of her space race movie Hidden Figures.
"If you know a family in need that would like to see our movie but can't afford it have them come," she wrote on Twitter. "It's first come first served. My mom would not have been able to afford to take me and my siblings. So, I'm honoring her and all single parents this #mlkweekend (Martin Luther King holiday weekend) Pass the word."
"This is how phenomenal this woman is @therealoctaviaspencer bought out the movie theatre for TONIGHT'S 8pm showing of #hiddenfigures at Rave cinemas Baldwin Hills in Los Angeles California for poverty stricken families who want to see this movie with their children on #MLK day," Taraji P. Henson, who co-starred with Spencer in the movie, added on Instagram.
