27 Dresses is by no means an unknown rom-com, I’d say as far as the rom-com canon goes this one is relatively well known – that being said, I don’t think its value within the genre is acknowledged or properly weighed. 27 Dresses belongs to many classic rom-com sub-genres such as the wrong wedding rom-com, the wrong guy rom-com, enemies to lovers AKA irritable acquaintances to lovers rom-coms, and Katherine Heigl rom-coms, who definitely deserves her own sub-genre. Many critiques of this film revolve around its shallowness and formulaic nature. There are several aspects of rom-com that, though cliché and perhaps formulaic, remain integral to the overall success of romantic comedies. 27 Dresses contains the following of said clichés: attractive leads (bonus points for pretending they aren’t above averagely gorgeous within the realm of the film), a cynic of love, a lovable pet, a quirky best friend, a third act betrayal reveal, a selfish family member, a love interest who sees the real main character under their facade, among others I’m likely forgetting. So 27 Dresses is cliché, but if cliché is what you’re striving to avoid, I would recommend steering clear of rom-coms altogether. Part of the collective affection for rom-com that has kept it around for so long is found within its comfort and predictability. The protagonist, Jane, embodies lovers of rom-com with her staunch defense and love of weddings, despite the potential monotony and hopelessness pointed out by her cynical love interest. 27 Dresses is at its core a rom-com specifically designed for people who already love the genre. Though Jane goes through a transformation and becomes a stronger version of herself by the end of the film, yet another winning cliché, she still comes out victorious in the name of defending weddings as more than just institutional, capitalist, and ultimately meaningless processes. Jane as a character appeals to the typical target audience for rom-coms, namely people who are constantly told a genre they love has no value, that because it’s predictable and perhaps unrealistic, it simply isn’t any good. So it is because of Jane’s arc and character design that 27 Dresses remains popular and widely loved, despite its many, many critics.

In my opinion, the movie uses very good camera and audio visual equipment and the crew members and the filmmakers have played their roles very well. I really liked it.

More of a bridesmaid than a bride, 27 Dresses while inoffensive remains highly derivative and predictable to a fault.

"27 Dresses" mostly plays it pretty safe as a romantic comedy. I think it is a cute and harmless entry in the genre that fans should be able to enjoy. The premise does feel like it has the potential to be something more, with the lead character always being a bridesmaid yet yearning to find a love of her own, but it mostly feels like it is still sticking with a formula. I felt like I knew how this movie was going to play out early on and did little to surprise me. Overall, despite being a bit generic, there is a good amount of fun to be had, and I think it is light, sometimes funny, and mostly sweet.

The storyline isn't super original, but the message is clear - it's not fun to be the bridesmaid and not the bride, over and over and over again, and then some more.
Great choice of main character. Funny movie. I enjoyed it. Not every movie has to be super sophisticated to be enjoyable and entertaining.

This movie is one of my favorite movies now. I love everything about this movie. I wish there was still movies like this. The romcom and set up of this whole story line is amazing and the choices for the actors/actresses was amazing as well.
