Alone Together

Writer-director-star Katie Holmes perfectly captures those early pandemic days in the occasionally heartbreaking and mostly sweet and lovely romantic drama.

The film’s low-key charms, such as they are, aren’t restrained by adherence to formula so much as its myopic worldview.

The film does not trust its audience enough to draw our own conclusions about the people and their circumstances.

Its simplicity and lack of cinematic fancy strikes a tone of surprising relief.

At the same time Holmes’ famous ex rakes in the dough with a movie where he plays a virtually flawless human being meeting larger-than-life challenges with ease, she goes in the polar opposite direction

Alone Together has the momentum of a reclamation of sorts, but the plot tries to do too much, say too much, when it really should just be about love.

Alone Together is a trite and misguided dramedy about a would-be couple stuck quarantining in the same house during the COVID-19 pandemic. The only social distancing needed is for viewers to avoid this boring flop that fails to have any romantic sizzle.

Predictable story beats occur, right in line with some of the tragic difficulties many of us faced while in lockdown, and it feels more contrived than authentic.

Heartfelt but limp COVID-19 lock-down film set in the pandemic.

The highlight just may be Holmes’ daughter, Suri Cruise, singing “Blue Moon” over the opening credits.
