Amongst the Wolves

The movie is grounded by a rock solid performance from the film’s co-writer Luke McQuillan.

The ending is sufficiently convincing that it proves easy enough to forgive earlier clunks and creaks. An earthy reminder of easily ignored realities. A tribute to the independent spirit.

McQuillan is its sturdiest asset, grounding an increasingly complex plot with a centred performance as Danny.

Amongst the Wolves does provide satisfaction with the way things are wrapped up, which makes it worthwhile to experience more than once.

Overall, there’s enough to enjoy within Amongst The Wolves from its lead performance to its often scenic visuals that make the film worth a watch.

Amongst the Wolves is a gripping thriller but needed to pick a story and push harder. With themes of homelessness, gang culture, PTSD and the simplicity of trying to survive fans of gritty, grounded storytelling will enjoy this film. 



...O'Connor's depiction of misfortune, menace, and mayhem is frighteningly realistic and pushes the viewer into acknowledging how desensitised we've become to much of the world outside the cinema. No easy answers - and no easy watch.

Underdeveloped sub-plots get in the way, and Gillen’s crabby hoodlum shtick goes nowhere interesting. But this scrappy, economical crime saga has a big heart. Be patient with it.

Having made a film that is unsure whether it wants to be a socially conscious drama or a genre film, O’Connor proves to be master of neither.

The film showcases a raw, unpolished talent delivering something deeply accomplished. Voices like Mark O’Connor are ones that needs to be heard.
