As I watched this movie, I wasn't completely sure where the movie was going or what it was about. Its been two days and I haven't stopped thinking about this film. I realize that reviews aren't impressive but I'm going to disagree. Its a short-ish watch and asks some unusual questions about life choices. Its watchable and meaningful. I honestly didn't see it coming.

Simple, powerful.... Yet underrated. Watch with your mind in gear.

This was an interesting one. A low budget, minimally casted film about a war criminal and his maid. Surely giving Ben Kingsley all the room in the world to flex his prowess would have been a treat for us all. But his weird English accent and the lack of true emotional depth, was really the downfall for a potentially good movie.

The music and beautiful visuals were tops! Acting tool But the story line was depressing, and often difficult to follow. The murder of one of the main characters was totally thrown in for shock value. Plus the main character was so awful, and spent the whole time trying to justify himself Sorry I saw this movie.. Left me with a bad taste D

Kingsley, as expected, delivers a professional and riveting performance as a war criminal in hiding. The intensity is similar to his performance in Se xy Beast. His costar matches him scene by scene, although her character's history could have been more thoroughly described. This movie could have descended into a lolitaesque scenario but credit to the director/writer to being true to the grim reality of the story line. A quizzocal,(huh! turn) in the next to last scene was a false step but overal this movie is well worth the time.

A decent movie about the life of a war criminal hiding in the open.

Ben Kingsley stars in the indie political drama An Ordinary Man. The film follows a Serbian war criminal who's being sheltered by supporters as he takes advantage of a new maid to slip the security restrictions his benefactors have placed on him, endangering both of their lives. Kingsley gives a strong performance and has good chemistry with co-star Hera Hilmar; having a bit of a mentor/student relationship. And the script explores some interesting themes; namely one man's butcher is another man's hero, and freedom is relative. However, it plays a little coy with what The General did and whether he really was a criminal or just a man of war. An Ordinary Man addresses some complicated and thought-provoking issues, but it isn't quite sure where it's going and ends up kind of petering out.

Boring, just two actors with no drama.

Kingsley gives his usual good performance, and so does the young actress, but any attempt to make a war criminal more sympathetic with the story of his daughter I find objectionable--he ends up killing two young women, as well as probably wording his maid's parents' deaths. The girl is killed because she doesn't follow orders, which is ironic, because most war criminals try to excuse their atrocities by saying that they were just "following orders."
