Back to Black
audience Reviews
, 86% Audience Score- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsIf 'Back to Black' is not disposable, it is because of punctual outbreaks of sensitivity and, above all, because of the honorable effort of Marisa Abela.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsIt’s hard to make a film about Amy Winehouse that doesn’t hum with soul, chaos, and contradiction. But somehow, Back to Black finds a way. The performances aren’t the problem. Marisa Abela gives a committed, often affecting turn as Amy, capturing her voice, swagger, and fragility with surprising range. The music still stuns, and a few moments—Amy scribbling lyrics in solitude, or walking into a studio like it’s a confessional—almost crackle with honesty. But the film itself feels like it’s holding back. Worse—it feels like it’s curating. Sanitizing. Picking and choosing which parts of Amy’s story are “comfortable” to tell. There’s a glaring absence in how it addresses her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, the media’s relentless cruelty, and the complex role her father Mitch played in both enabling and exploiting her fame. These aren’t minor footnotes. They’re central to understanding Amy—not just the voice, but the woman behind it. Instead, we get a polished, mournful tribute that feels more like image control than storytelling. It's as if the film wants to honor Amy without confronting the very industry, and personal relationships, that helped destroy her. Back to Black is beautifully shot, often tender—but too safe. Amy Winehouse was messy, brilliant, raw, and real. She didn’t need to be rewritten. She needed to be seen. And sadly, this version still looks away.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsExtremely well done!
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsThis film was straight up depressing. Drunk and a screaming fool, I couldn't feel sorry for Amy at all. I don't believe she was this bad in the beginning. I wouldn't recommend it to her fans. It doesn't bring out her best which is her voice and songwriting ability.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsI found it average. I could not get any perspective from the film however the scene when she met Blake was very good.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsIf Amy was alive, she would have laughed her ass off. The movie is an offense to Amy!!! Both the actress vocal and appearance. Lack of authenticity - almost like the director didn’t knew about Amy before making the movie. The movies a disaster and feels like a joke 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 Crazy that it’s legal to make such a tacky movie on behalf of a dead person.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsDo not agree with the negative reviews of the critics in this case. I think the performance by Marisa Abela is nothing short of astounding and this made the film. I thought the singing was actually Winehouse but it was actually Abela channeling her; an amazing feat. I get how some felt the portrayal of the dad was sugarcoated, perhaps it did not highlight her inner demons so much, but that did not take away the enjoyment of the film IMHO.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsAbsolutely horrible. So disrespectful to Amy. Basically just saying shes an alcoholic and a druggy and blake was the only important thing in her life. Amy would NOT want this to be made.
