A film so supernaturally boring that light bends when passing its dense outer mantle.

The whole dreary thing looks as if it was put through an Instagram filter called Rotgut that makes everything look like it was soaked in weak coffee and bile.

Matthew Modine is outstanding as an amnesia-stricken bank robber in Brian A. Miller's VOD-centric thriller.

Backtrace is a bare-bones action movie. It follows the beat-by-beat expectations of movies in the genre, squandering the intriguing potential of a plot about an experimental drug.

It is no exaggeration to say that Backtrace was the cinematic equivalent of a headache. It's too ridiculous and underwritten to be a full-fledged crime thriller and too self-serious to be an enjoyable B-movie.

Though the action scenes occasionally bring the film to life, there's an overwhelming lack of dramatic tension across most of the running time.

The biggest problem with this absurdly incoherent crime thriller is that it's played with a straight face.

If you think the new straight to video Stallone movie is just a generic crime movie that cast big names to put them on the cover, you'd be right.

Not really a Stallone movie - or much of anything.
