Bad Times at the El Royale
audience Reviews

- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI guess this movie totally underrated because no one talks about it from every direction. This is my favorite movie and I review it often. For me El-Royal is thought-provoking story about role of fate and choice. It’s gripping from the start to the end. Action-packed script, magnetic esthetic, jaw-dropping turns, music is outstanding and (quite a few songs from movies was added to my playlists)
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsClose to as great as Goddard’s previous Cabin in the Woods. Completely different movie but equally enticing. And the music and performances are so great.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsThis energetic, enjoyable noir crime story lands us in 1969 as a disparate group of individuals, all with stuff to hide, converge on the El Royale motel - itself a building of secrets and lies. For the most part it's beautifully acted - especially the outstanding Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo - and elegently shot and lit, lending what is essentially a fairly surface-level piece a genuine depth with social commentary and emotional heart. The false note is in Chris Hemsworth's lazy performance; when his character comes to the fore in the final act, there also seems to be a missing handful of scenes, as the plot jumps to a place that doesn't entirely ring true. None of this stops it being enjoyable and attention-grabbing, with the influence of Tarantino clear (though you can't help but feel his trademark lack of discipline and focus would have let the film down further).
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsIdiots! Don't know a really good movie when it bites you on the nose? Editing, SOUND, script, plot twists, acting, and real psychological drama! Yeah, no flying supes or cute animated sweeties, but hey, this is a MOVIE, A REAL MOVIE! Forgive the rant. It don't mean anything.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsOne of those movies that has been on my watchlist for years, and I finally got around to seeing it. Wow, what a labor of love. The ensemble cast is outstanding. Another “deep bench” with some established heavyweights blended perfectly with the next generation of stars. Tense, deliberate filmmaking which made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I had NO IDEA how it would end, and that’s a very good thing. Bravo to all involved.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis is one of those perfect films. Amazing cinematography, incredible, surprising plot, amazing acting from a star-filled cast, and an incredible setting. It’s one of the few times that Hemsworth plays an evil character and Jeff Bridges turns in his usual jaw-dropping performance— pointedly out-acting, and out-macho-ing Hemsworth. It’s magic to see. Constant surprises. Weird. A stunning period piece that makes use of countless tropes from the era (1969).
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsIt has enough style and good performances to stand out, even if it's just another forgettable Tarantino knockoff.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThis movie definitely kept my attention. The different characters’ stories were well laid out, and the ending came together well. Also, great production as far as scenery, set, and costume design.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsToo long, too boring and I'm happy that it's over with watching this movie because i couldn't enjoy nearly nothing.
