*Batman Forever* (1995), directed by Joel Schumacher, trades the gothic intensity of Tim Burton’s films for a lighter, campier vibe reminiscent of the 1960s Adam West *Batman* series. Val Kilmer, in a role he famously clashed with Schumacher over, steps into the cape as a solid but understated Dark Knight, bringing a brooding charm despite his reported discomfort on set. While less unhinged than its predecessors, the film’s vibrant energy and colorful aesthetic make it a personal favorite for many, offering a fun, if flawed, pivot in the franchise. Jim Carrey’s manic Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones’s over-the-top Two-Face lean heavily into cartoonish villainy, lacking the depth of Jack Nicholson’s Joker or Danny DeVito’s Penguin. Their performances, while entertaining, often feel like they’re in a different movie, overshadowing the more grounded elements like Chris O’Donnell’s introduction as Robin. The clash of tones—part serious, part absurd—prevents the film from reaching the heights of Burton’s entries. Still, *Batman Forever* is a wildly enjoyable ride, buoyed by its infectious energy, a catchy soundtrack, and moments of genuine heart, particularly in Bruce Wayne’s introspective arc. It may not match the gravitas of *The Dark Knight* or the gothic brilliance of *Batman Returns*, but its playful spirit and Kilmer’s understated performance make it a nostalgic gem for fans of 1990s superhero cinema.

It was great to see it on the big screen again. It was reliving my childhood. I hold tribute to the late Val Kilmer for doing an awesome performance as the Dark Knight.

A decent edition to the Batman series

A little campy by modern Batman standards, but filled with A-listers of the time and still a very fun film for those who can just sit back and be entertained.

from the minute Joel took over for directing, the whole film is littered with unlikeable characters, cringe-worthy acting, lazy dialogue and even nipples on the batsuit. the action is very basic but jim Carey does bring a bizarre energy to the screen. Tommy Lee Jones' Two-face is basically characterising another version of the joker and has no interesting qualities to him.

Campy and over the top, yes, and also super fun. This wasn’t trying to be the Dark Knight. It was trying to be entraining and it was!

I really tried to like this movie, but I just couldn't. It had some enjoyable moments, but it wasn't enough to make me like the movie.
