Beast of Burden

"Beast of Burden" places a number of burdens on the audience, almost none of which are worth enduring.

The film's flashbacks, which are either too clipped or excessively scored, effectively step on the actors' toes.

Strapping us into the cockpit of a single-engine plane beside pilot Daniel Radcliffe, this high-concept low-budget thriller tries to do in the air what Tom Hardy's 2013 road movie Locke did on the ground.

Every design element is working in sync to never let us feel comfortable, creating a remarkably cramped ambiance.

A single worthy performance is held back by a substandard script, narrative structure, and just about everything else. Daniel Radcliffe is very good. The film itself, not so much.

The thin concept generates some brief tension before falling apart amid the murky visuals, plus a series of arbitrary and increasingly far-fetched twists.

Isn't strong with surprise reveals and closure, but it does have Radcliffe, who gives himself to the part, making the solo show passably compelling, holding attention when it counts the most.
