Blaze

Blaze is worth seeing, partly as it’s the first foray into the world of feature films by an original artist, but perhaps more importantly for the performance of its young actor.

It’s strong stuff, underpinned by Savage’s remarkable work in the leading role.

Like Barton’s startling artistic vision, Blaze is a masterpiece.

A hot, sticky, trippy fusion of wild style and painfully genuine emotion, with plenty of moments that take your breath away.

“Blaze” marks the feature directing debut of a distinctive new voice, and though there’s a certain woodenness to the narrative, the visuals — glitter dreams of a 10-foot fuchsia dragon — radiate with originality.

Tackling its tough subject matter delicately and honestly, this poetic drama deftly uses its wobbly line between reality and imagination to explore rage and grief with compassion and humanity.

Mostly, it seemed like an excuse to have some visually sumptuous fantasy sequences... But in the end, there's not much there.

A solid, sometimes startling directorial debut. Touches of beauty and emotional potency can’t mask some technical and stylistic flaws, but this is a worthwhile watch nonetheless.
