Eichner hits most of the right notes, lovingly lambasting queer culture, but this movie follows too many of the same romcom tropes as its heterosexual contemporaries.

For the most part, it works rather well – a ribald and riotous onslaught of bracing humour which belies a sweetly soft centre.

It’s a proper, laugh-out-loud comedy which have you gasping for breath one minute and hands clapped over your mouth the next – yes, they went there.

Bros fails to satisfactorily map out its own space. Passes the time well enough. Doesn’t quite pull down the barriers.

It makes for a somewhat overloaded movie, sometimes very funny, sometimes with a sense of items being ticked off an agenda, sometimes emotionally a bit routine... All up, though, this is a major leap forward.

Queer love stories are every bit as individual as heterosexual ones, and we deserve to see them on screen, but can certainly aim a little higher than this smug, unsatisfying mismatch of ideas.

Beyond its historical value, the movie is relevant because it puts characters at the center of its narrative who have rarely been the protagonists in mainstream love stories. [Full review in Spanish]

While the film does a fine job taking romantic comedy tropes and giving them the gay treatment, they remain tropes.
