Canary Black

As visual wallpaper it’s serviceable enough, providing a constant backbeat of blam-blam gunshots and explosions, mostly at night.

Canary Black is recognizable as an action movie but it’s neither thrilling nor dramatic enough to qualify as entertainment.

Despite some slick and stylish action sequences, this globetrotting high-tech spy thriller is hampered by a formulaic plot that never musters much intrigue or suspense.

The movie's epilogue suggests that its makers think there's enough life in these characters for a sequel. But the stakes will need to be raised if any series is to maintain interest.



Do yourself a favor and skip this one unless you are looking for a movie that reuses the same insult of calling a strong female protagonist a bitch over and over again as she tries to save the world.

Despite the familiar genre elements, the movie is entertaining and manages to maintain interest, especially for those who enjoy thrillers without too many pretensions. [Full review in Spanish]

Morel seems content to maintain the genre baseline – a twisty overcomplicated MacGuffin plot interspersed with gunfights, fisticuffs, car chases, and the occasional teensy dab of emotional character development – without innovating on it.

For over half of the time, Avery takes down dozens of well-trained, much larger men with an assortment of martial arts moves that would shame Bruce Lee. She never gets so much as a scratch while ducking thousands of rounds of automatic weapons fire.

This predictable spy slogfest barely gets off the ground.

Kate Beckinsale's committed performance isn't enough to elevate this spy action-thriller above mediocrity.
