There is a nice mix of action and intrigue to this one. Went in blind and was not quite sure where the movie would take me next. It's definitely worth checking out.

Uh uh, no... not even sure why the score is so high here. I can go ahead and compliment the acting and cinematography. Par for the course. But the story did not grab me at any point in its progression.

Ameiiii

there are some issues with realism, for instance the chains used to hold a guy prisoner are clearly not tight enough to prevent slipping out, and i just don't think it would have been hard to make it look better. any number of things could be used, for instance a pair of handcuffs if they really are too incompetent to make the chains tighter. elijah wood's character has an extremely fake neck tattoo that they insist on doing close ups on in good lighting. some of the special effects regarding fake bruises and swelling look quite cheap as well. overall, the film is a good watch, the props and settings are well done besides the chains, but the makeup department just totally flopped. as for the narrative, it's pretty good but i really think it could have used a little extra something at the end. i would have enjoyed the film drastically more if elijah wood's character had been just a little more devious instead of so innocent.

I was hopeful in the beginning of this movie because of the good actors that are in it. It was actually pretty good up to the death of the father. It then took the turn of a bad high school essay. A great thesis without anything to back it up.

A bizarre but truly interesting psychological horror comedy about a young man invited to his estranged father who slowly finds a dark past waiting for him. It’s not exactly a pleasant watch. One with plenty of cringe comedy and some bizarre set pieces. But arguably that adds to the movie’s clever use of tension and unease that lets you know something’s up, even before the horror comes into play. There’s a lot of quiet ambience to let the seaside atmosphere settle in with some nice cinematography, scenery, and lighting. There’s a twist that happens a third of the way through that caught me off guard. And then the twists keep coming as the truth unravels and subverts your expectations to where you’re really not sure where the story is going. But I appreciate that it still ties together with the main narrative/themes the movie set up from the beginning and still makes sense even in retrospective. Elijah Wood does a great job at really conveying some heavy emotional vulnerability with a gentle subtlety that gives weight to his words and expressions. A great contrast to the majority of the characters’ grimy exterior. The movie isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s certainly a creepy endearing underrated gem of 2020.

It's an acceptably original story and Elijah Wood really grabs this role, but it isn't quite as off the rails as it could be and doesn't full-on change the game. 🍀

Enjoyed it. Not too many moving parts. 4*

I’m confused at the high rating of this film. It wasn’t scary, rarely funny but it was weird. I don’t think it’s terrible but definitely not a 75%. The end 30min was pretty violent for people interested in that. The haircut Elijah woods is rocking is beyond ridiculous lol.

Elijah Wood is exceptional in every way and really draws you in with his incredible performance. This movie has so many twists and turns that always have you wondering what's going to happen next. It's funny, raunchy, violent, and all around weird in the best ways.
