Crooked House
audience Reviews
, 54% Audience Score- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsAgatha Christie at her very best! Anything with Glenn Close is absolutely worth watching, but here a fantastic ensemble cast, led by Max Irons — whom I find to be sublime, a perfect cinematic leading man, who can act with the hair on the back of his neck, a subtle flutter of the fingers, a slightly sloppy collar — yet never oversteps the limits of exquisite thespian taste — delivers a rollicking, chilling, disturbing, distressing, fascinating psychological study of a disturbed family. Think "Five Little Pigs" meets "Downton Abbey," sort of. Fantastic soundtrack & a really intelligent cinematographic direction over richly textured interiors, as well as grounds & city settings, everything thought through to perfection. I watched this in 2025, when the meaning of "oligarchy" resonates even more deeply than in 2017 when this magnificent psychological thriller came out. If you enjoyed "Knives Out!" with Daniel Craig, you must watch this far more serious & ultimately much more satisfying exploration of the same themes, as examined by the lively imagination of Agatha Christie in one of her last & undeniably one of her finest mystery novels. This is the perfect film to watch with someone; while the subject is shocking & even distressing, it is all very well done, without resorting to gratuitous gore or smarmy romantic slop. All the more convincing, as a direct result. "Crooked House" really gets under your skin and stays in your head, raising even more questions than it answers.
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsOld England and cruelty
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsit respects the source materials a mostly but could of been done a lot better . Well also adding it’s own the to a Agatha Christie classic the most rememberable performances of this film are from Glenn Close and Sophia de Gaviland In my opinion . Not much as mystery mind you.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsTerrible movie. Bad adaptation, the characters are all wrong and the script tumbles clumsily between the book and constant anachronistic references both stylistically and thematically. The character of Brenda was particularly butchered. Too bad :/
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsEveryone loves a good mystery. But they'll not find one here. There's simply nothing particularly interesting or the least bit suspenseful in this one. Close and Anderson provide a bit of much needed fun, but unfortunately Irons and Martini as the leads, are both pretty but dull, lacking any chemistry together. Plus, the shockingly abrupt conclusion is unsatisfactory. The only creditable aspect of the film is the imposing country house and grounds which provide a colorful and atmospheric setting.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA great cast and intriguing mysteryy made this film an intriguing watch.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsA bit boring. Wanted to stop watching in the middle because it's so dull. I just continued watching it only to find out who the killer was. Otherwise, I would have stopped watching it.

- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars"Crooked House" is much like "Murder on the Orient Express" in that both Agatha Christie murder mysteries involve tedious questioning of various suspects taking up most of the running time, and then comes the sudden, unexpected conclusion. I expected to like "Crooked House" more than I did, as it was one of author Christie's top personal favorites but this film drags along in a dreary old country mansion peopled with mostly middle-aged family members who hang around hoping for a big inheritance now that the old patriarch is dead. As usual in Christie stories, the American suspect in among a long list of more-than-the-usually-annoying Brits is a brassy half-brained sleaze from Las Vegas - Christie didn't like the foreigners she placed in her plots except for Belgian Hercule Poirot but he's not included in this tale. At first we are told that the killer may still be in the house but when the private eye from London arrives, there is no urgency to find the offender. Worse, the sputtering romance between him and the saucy granddaughter never gets off the sprawling grounds. However, the sudden, surprising conclusion sort of makes up for the very slow build up. Sort of.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsClever mystery with a strong cast.
