"Daliland," directed by Mary Harron and featuring Ben Kingsley as Salvador Dalí, explores the surreal artist's later years through the eyes of a young gallery assistant. Set against the backdrop of 1974 New York, the film delves into Dalí's complex relationship with his wife Gala (Barbara Sukowa) while navigating the art world's chaos. The acting is a highlight, particularly Kingsley's portrayal, which captures Dalí's eccentricity and vulnerability. However, the screenplay suffers from a lack of focus, often sidelining Dalí's story for the assistant's perspective, which detracts from the film's potential impact. Cinematography effectively showcases Dalí's vibrant world, but the editing feels uneven, leading to pacing issues. While "Daliland" touches on themes of aging and artistic relevance, it struggles to convey these messages with depth. Compared to Harron's previous works, this film feels more conventional and less daring. Overall, "Daliland" offers an engaging glimpse into Dalí's life but ultimately falls short of its ambitions, earning a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

Ben Kingsley is probably the best fit cast for the part. A cinematic look at Dali's beginning, and his prime, to his final days. It's entertaining and informative and definitely worth watching.

I really enjoyed this movie....Beautiful Story and Great Acting...Touched my Soul. * I have noticed many great movies who are reviewed by the "so-called pros" get low ratings, it's a shame and quite sad. I, like so many, pay them no mind any longer and make up my own mind.

Excellent movie. Quite enjoyable. Flawless acting. Nicely done. I was planning to watch on the theatre but it was removed within a few days of release.

While Ben Kingsley is worth watching as surrealist artist Salvador Dali, the film itself feels a little prosaic and underwhelming. The story is very thin and there is no emotional complexity to justify the relationship between Dali and his assistant.

Not it. Artistic vision is interesting, but not it. There needed to be depth beyond "look how enjoyable and eccentric all of this is"

I'm disappointed about the cinematography and the direction: - I find the photography un-characteristic, specially in the last part. The lighting is often not sharp, the close-ups are taking from banal angles with unsignificant lighting and shading and the coloring seems random in most sequences - The direction seems rushed as well, characters walk in and out from every direction and proportions between the bodies in the photography is missing. Ben Kingsley interpretation is valuable, although the photography doesn't allow him the expressivity he might have achieved with different lighting and close-up. Christopher Briney seems the most functioning actor in the cast.

Definitely worth a watch; more of a commentary on the art world of the '70s than a film about Dali, though Kingsley is excellent as always.
