Good actors but the movie is kind of boring and the characters predictable and cartoonish.

I’m curious if there was a U.S. Army military advisor on the payroll. If so, he missed a very obvious faux pas towards the end of the movie. When sitting at the table before and during the spill scene, John was wearing his green Army shirt with shoulder epaulets. The E-6 Staff Sergeant rank insignia was being worn backwards, or in reverse on those epaulets. A major faux pas if being viewed by former or active military personnel. I’m a 28 year U.S. Air Force veteran but we are all familiar with each services rank insignia.

Dear John cranks up the melodrama in true Nicholas Sparks fashion, but it’s tough to ignore the solid performances at its core. Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried have this undeniable chemistry that sells the whirlwind romance, even when the plot feels like a well-worn path. Tatum, in particular, shines as John, playing the soldier torn between duty and love. But it’s the father-son relationship that hits the hardest. The emotional goodbye to his father is just as gut-punching as his farewell to Savannah, adding layers you don’t usually expect in your typical romantic drama. Lasse Hallström brings his signature warm touch, making even the most predictable plot points feel personal. You’ve got all the classic Sparks stuff—sandy beaches, handwritten letters, and star-crossed lovers—but the real standout is how the film dives into deeper connections, showing that communication goes beyond just words. The cinematography? Gorgeous. While the movie doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, it knows its audience and delivers on that sweet, emotional tension. Yeah, it’s sentimental and predictable, but that’s also kind of the point, right? If you’re looking for an old-school tearjerker with a stunning cast and beautiful backdrops, Dear John does what it’s supposed to. It’s simple, heartfelt, and totally designed to yank at those heartstrings—so, maybe stock up on tissues before you hit play.

The Movie Is Predicatable But I Like How Grounded The Characters Feel, It's Like Your Neighbours And That Makes The Movie Excellent, Amazing Score And Memorable Theme Song. I love Amanda Seyfried And Channing Tatum's Chemistry

This movie seems less and less heartfelt and more and more shall we say ("yawns") a bit boring really.

I'll be honest, I expected "Dear John" to play out one of two ways, and it surprised me by not playing out even close to either of those ways. The movie does feel uneven in its pacing and it is aggressively trying to get emotions out of the audience, but I do think the story is pretty solid. The performances are good even when the dialogue is hit or miss, and it makes the movie pretty watchable. I do feel the core romance is a bit rushed in the beginning but there's enough to get on board even though the leads could have benefitted from more layered expositions. Overall, it is a movie that has a lot of moments that can come off as cheesy or sappy, but I think there was more here than I expected and for that, I do think it deserves some props.

This movie was such a disappointment. Terrible storyline, missing any sort of climax. Wish I could get those 2 hours of my life back

Definitely one for romantics, but very well acted with enough unpredictable turns to keep it interesting. The low ratings are not fair, in my opinion, and romances aren’t my thing. The leads make very believable lovers and the chemistry remains throughout. The biggest fault I have with this film is some verrrrry slow pacing in spots, but worth a watch if you’re in the mood for a sweet romance.
