Fantastic movie. A fun switch your brain off horror
  • Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Death Of A Unicorn doesn’t reinvent the horror comedy subgenre, but it has an excellent cast that deliver their lines with humor and a knowing wink. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega possess wonderful chemistry as the father-daughter duo who accidentally kill a unicorn en route to a weekend retreat. Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, and Will Poulter play their parts as diabolical pharmaceutical family members with unwavering commitment, making it fun to root for their certain demise. It isn’t a perfect B-movie, as the first half of the second act drags while the characters debate the unicorn’s healing properties. However, once the lights go out (literally), it goes full creature feature mode and all bets are off. The direction itself is a bit wonky, as actors step on each other’s lines, sometimes missing the opportunity to garner another earned laugh. Equally as odd are many of the camera angles—it seems as if the director missed the course on where to place a camera lens. In the hands of a more capable director, this could have been the perfect B-movie; instead, it settles for being good enough. If you’re in search of a fun film to watch with a group of friends, Death Of A Unicorn is a great way to spend two hours.

So bad it's good. This movie is ridiculous and silly that it's so dumb and funny.

A wildly imaginative genre mashup that doesn’t always stick the landing, Death of a Unicorn delivers a surreal blend of dark comedy, horror, and fantasy. Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd lead with charm and surprising emotional depth, while Will Poulter and Anthony Carrigan shine in scene-stealing roles. Though the film’s tone wavers and its world-building feels underdeveloped at times, its boldness and originality make for an undeniably unique ride. Imperfect but memorable.

Oh wow this was Bad ... the trailer made it look really funny but the movie had No idea what it wanted to be , was it a comedy?, a horror?, a heartfelt touching movie between a father and a daughter? something to do with capitalism and mans greed to destroy the rarest things on the planet for MONEY ?? Lacked the comidic edge, wasnt scary, wasnt touching, just another lesson about bad people being bad.

Definitely entertaining and I laughed a couple times, but this feels like a fumble with a star studded cast that holds the movie together while also being kind of dull. It’s pretty stupid.

Written and directed by Alex Scharfman, Death of a Unicorn is an interesting premise that falls flat due to its predictability and inconsistent tone. When the trailer first released, I was excited for Death of a Unicorn because it seemed as though it was a horror-comedy. However, Death of a Unicorn never delivers on its horror or comedy elements and the film feels inconsistent. Despite a talented ensemble cast, the only memorable performance is from Will Poulter. I found Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd to be disinteresting and annoying at times. Their father-daughter relationship felt believable, but neither character is compelling or captivating enough to be an interesting lead character. The flamboyance of Death of a Unicorn is fun and stylish at times, but there is nothing special with the film’s cinematography or visuals. The Unicorn designs are cool and I would have loved for them to be featured more throughout the film, but the Unicorns are minimal and underused. The script is somewhat all over the place, but the best lines are consistently delivered by Will Poulter. Though Death of a Unicorn leans heavily into its mythical lore, the approach to the film’s story feels forced rather than progressing naturally. There are several moments throughout Death of a Unicorn that are very funny, but the overall lack of consistency made the film feel tonally confused. Overall, Death of a Unicorn had the potential to be something special. Despite a talented cast and an interesting premise, Death of a Unicorn disappoints because of its poor writing and execution. Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd phoned these performances, but Will Poulter is innocent.

This is fine. It has nothing particularly great, but is enjoyable enough as it is.
