Death on the Nile
audience Reviews

- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsI appreciate the stellar cast. Call me old-fashioned but I still prefer David Suchet as Poirot. He is unique with the Belgium accent and mincing gaits. I watched Kenneth in Murder on the Orient Express and I was disappointed. So I gave it another try to thwart away my prejudice. I can definitively confirm that Poirot's role is not for Kenneth. He didn't do well with the Belgium accent. This is no disrespect to Kenneth because one can't be good at ALL the roles. All the Agatha Christie he directed with amazing casts are credited to him. I hope he will ask David Suchet for his future Poirot movies. You will receive so much more audiences and viewers if David Suchet is back as Poirot. It is also his dream. Fulfill it and Kenneth will be remembered always. Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsPainfully bad from the early moments when they gave Poirot’s mustache a backstory. Frankly, that says everything you need to know about how overwrought and pointless this film is.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsA fun murder mystery that keeps you guessing with the investigation. The adaptation and direction is a bit unbalanced, but it’s lifted by the strong cinematography, lighting, color palette, set design, and the strength of the original source material. Some of the actors are hamming it up, but others knock it out of the park. Some of the story beats they give to Hercule Poirot feel odd, but doesn’t completely diminish his involvement in the movie. The twist is well done, though admittedly the rewatchability of the movie post-twist might be a bit iffy. Overall, I wouldn’t say it’s an amazing adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic novel, but it’s certainly a solid one that still gave me a good time.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsAn otherwise good film heavily weighed down by the really conspicuous amount of out-of-place b l a c k representation. The absurd (and wholly unearned) worshipful way the film presents (and wants the audience to regard) the b l a c k characters is extremely cringe-inducing as well. There's also a lot of 1950s era b l a c k music shoehorned into a film that's supposed to take place in Egypt in 1937. So much of this film that would have been good ended up being a complete eyeroll because of this. The moderate rating is for the visuals alone.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsHave the directors even read Agatha Christie? Poirot seems so uncharacteristic in this version and a combination of all the modern awkward detective tropes. There are some scenes where he just seems like a creepy old loner dude lurking around, whereas in the book although he is observant, he is also highly sociable, charming, and handles situations with grace rather than awkwardness. There were also lots of ‘fluff’ scenes, like CGI of fish in the Nile that didn’t really add to the story line…. Of course the visuals in this movie were beautiful, every scene looked gorgeous and the music was great too, but it felt like another modern day gimmick that favours style over substance.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsI quite enjoyed the previous film in the series "Murder on the Orient Express", and this sequel doesn't disappoint. I enjoy Kenneth Branagh's portrayal of the mustached detective. Branagh hits just the right cord of stage, let them hear you in the cheap seats, ACTING. With Branagh comes a good number of experienced actors coming along to play their parts as well. All involved do a good job of being memorable murder suspects. In many ways I liked this film more than its predecessor. Branagh includes details in the story to make this feel like a more Hercule Peroit focused story. As opposed to simply being the detective in the right place at the right time. This case is a more personal crime than most. We also begin with a flashback explaining a bit more of Hercule Poriot's backstory. The movie takes some liberties from the source material, combining some characters to help streamline it, giving the film more of a clear focus. I think the film is better off for it. They do a good job of helping the audience keep track of each of the suspects, with their personalities and different motives. This does come at a price. More time spent with the characters does mean the film takes longer to get going. It takes its sweet time to get to either "death" and the "Nile" part of the story. There is also an inherent problem in adapting any of Agatha Christie's work. There are so many different murder mystery type stories that borrow so heavily from Christie the original seems a little predictable. Similar to adapting Jane Austen, by 2022 so many of these kinds of stories have been done that returning to the source seems a bit derivative. This film also ends much better than the previous installment. Without spoiling either film, the movie gives the audience all the necessary clues to solve the crime for themselves. To some this may make the conclusion predictable. But I personally prefer predictability opposed to a finale that makes sense. If you're in the mood for a good murder mystery, the solution is right in front of you.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsPoirot is amazing, but this movie ruined the magic of the book. Would not recommend.
