Desert Hearts

Really wanted to like this one, but boy did it ever drag.

Stumbled across this movie when I was fifteen, fell deeply in love with it and craved a romance depicted in it. Years and Years later; still in deep love with it.

One of my favorite movies of all time.

Loved it. Haven't seen this movie since the 80s and it really holds up.

You have to have lived in the fifties to fully aquatint to the prejudices . The actors are excellent and recreate the era vividly .

It is crisp and beautiful to watch! The romance and sex scenes are so well shot! I loved how Prof. Bell's character does a complete 180 during the course of the story and the entertaining contrast Cay's character provides throughout. It is also (almost) educational in terms of historical attitudes towards gay woman in not so distant past!

The cinematography and production quality alone make this film fantastic, and the subtle silence of it all spoke everything that words can't. Not every character has to be eloquent or every story told with never ending exposition, especially when it comes to female narratives. Our perspective is best told through dynamics and subtext and body language. This film mastered that and is why it remains a classic today.

An absolute classic! I've watched it three times now and loved every moment of it. It's a must see.

Wonderful and thoughtful film - I've first time viewed it in 2020, was 40 in 1985 when it was made. Spot on for 1959, 1985, and still today is a wonderful romantic film. Very well done by all!
