- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsAn incredibly moving performance by Cynthia Erivo makes this a must watch. Her ability to convey emotion through the screen in the absence of verbal communication is remarkable and consistent with someone who has lost as much as Jacqueline has and is dealing with that trauma. Strong demonstration of how much communication is not verbal. Jacqueline’s inability to tell the truth to her girlfriend’s family was heartbreaking. Cynthia’s performance compels you to desperately want Jacqueline to connect with Callie (who persists but doesn’t push in the most beautiful way) and when she does, it’s very moving. It also draws your attention to how people in your real life might have this experience and that they can be seen and unseen in the same moment.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsCynthia Erivo and Alia Shawkat were such an unexpectedly powerful duo.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsIn life sometimes we drift away so much that we forget our purpose Cynthia Erivo and Alia Shawkat co-star forming an unlikely friendship Erivo plays Jaqueline, she's barely making it on her own having fleed her home country torn apart by war She lives as a drifter in the Greek islands trying to make money to feed herself shutting out any reminders of the painful memories Jaqueline then runs into a tour guide named Callie The both of them become close The performances are so rich it's actually kinda hard to watch because it's so heartbreaking watching Jacquieline break down explaining the horrors she had to endure The narrative is pretty rusty but both actresses work together very well with enough resonance that can be universal This is what can be said for most refugees is that all it takes is 1 person to fully understand them A slow burning character study that works well
