In other words, it is just conventional TV-style shooting. Which is appropriate, I guess, for a comedian who seems to get most of his ideas about life from the mass media.

It's impossible to deny the virtuosity of his non-stop delivery, but the relentless macho onslaught sadly lacks the saving grace of Richard Pryor's self-irony.

Mr. Murphy is clearly proud of his prejudices. Nonetheless, this feature-length concert film is hilarious, putting Mr. Murphy on a par with Mr. Pryor at his best.

[Murphy's] material, which trades on racial and sexual stereotypes even as it skewers them, may be offensive to some, but for others he remains a hell of a good yuck.

This is a classic that somehow has only gained more relevance despite Murphy not touring as a stand-up for more than three decades now.

Eddie Murphy was one of the hottest tickets in comedy in the 1980s and while he puts on a show in Eddie Murphy Raw, there's a good amount that doesn't age well in 2024.
