Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction
audience Reviews
, 71% Audience Score- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsCute and earnest film with good performances from the leads. Beautiful cinematography except that most of the outdoor shots appear to have an excessive amount of CG. It gets a little screwball in the third act, but overall sincere and endearing. To respond to Roger Moore of Film Nation's review: "The third act has action, intrigues, comedy, and a jaw-dropping surprise or two. More's the pity since the opening acts are such a sexless, humorless drag." This is ridiculously off the mark and totally backwards. The opening acts are far superior in terms of intrigue and titillating sensuality. You find yourself on the edge of curiosity with Knudsen's sometimes enigmatic sometimes majestic (pun intended) sometimes comedic, always intellectual performance, and all while remaining honest and accessible. It is only the final act of the film that goes over-the-top screwball comedy. One can almost hear the Benny Hill theme music as the unrealistic plot and character portrayals turn gonzo, and the poor acting of the supporting cast is painful to witness. There were no plot surprises, as Moor puts it, whatsoever. SPOILER ALERT: The only surprise is that the titular character tries and half-fails half-succeeds to abnegate the antagonist's screwball plan by implementing a screwball plan of her own. We as the audience will be exasperated and incredulous at how one character is barely able to scale an approximately 8-foot wall and falls to the opposite side. He then somehow manages to bring a new-born baby with him on the return trip. Sure. We are also left wondering how the antagonists could not reach such a simple and obvious solution, and are stunned by their fantastic stupidity in failing to do so.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsA quirky, funny and well paced movie
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsI thought I knew what the movie would be like and how it would end but I was quite delightfully surprised at the comeuppance of the main character. And by the main character, I don't mean Ehrengard. Though she is a delightful person, as another reviewer mentioned, she has not much to do in the first two-thirds of the movie except sit on a pedastal. And yet, she shines at the end with a remarkable turnaround.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThis is totally delightful and totally ridiculous...a mash up of Sheridan, Moliere and Wilde--with some gorgeous sets, an attractive main cast, and somewhat witheringly fake long shots of the supposed landscape. Knudsen, from Borgen, can really do no wrong. She's marvelous, as is Folsgard. Don't worry about neatening up all the pitfalls that the movie places in front of the characters...there is no rational outcome, just a fun outcome.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsQuirky and unpredictable. Well paced. Loved this movie
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI don't know what movie Rotten Tomatoes (or its reviewers) was watching. 40? Really? I found this movie an utter delight, from its typical Karen Blixen/Isaac Dinesen source material, to the "Die Forelle" settings peppered throughout the soundtrack, to the pitch-perfect performances by the main actors. The title character was played by director Suzanne Bier's daughter Alice Bier Zanden - let's hope we see her again soon.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsAbsolutely charming! Humorous, romantic, sexy. Gorgeous production design and costumes designed by Denmark's Queen Margrethe! I normally don't watch movies twice but I will watch this again.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis movie is awesome. All the intrique, manipulation and hidden things. Made me laugh. Really good comedy. Also it had uninspected turns, loved that.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsI watched the entire movie, so I can't say that it's all bad. I enjoyed much of it, but in the end, are we to believe that Cazotte was practiced in the art of seduction? Nothing in the plot truly suggests a comparison. He was capable of winning over gullible and naive teenagers but when it came to actually seducing Ehrengard, he was nothing more than a bumbling fop of a man.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsA movie that captures the subtle nuances of good literature.
