Frybread Face and Me
audience Reviews
, 81% Audience Score- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsThis is one of those independent movies that’s highly rated, but you don’t understand why. While it offers an interesting view into modern Native American life, at least Native Americans who live in poverty, the movie is slow, and the dialogue, while it did produce a few smiles, is mostly without substance.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsThe acting in this movie is absolutely horrid. I would not recommend watching.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI'm an Anglo who has lived and worked with the Navajo and Pueblos, and this film has the ring of authentic truth: the Grandmother as the heart and base of the family with her traditional values and her outwardly uncompromising refusal to learn and speak English, though she might well understand it and speak it. At the end of the summer, when Benny must return to the city, once in his mother's car he removed his traditional headband and puts on his Mom's cowboy hat. He's transitioning back to city boy, though he will never go back entirely. This film is a continuation of the slowly increasing number of modern-day films about the Native Southwest: "Reservation Dogs," Smoke Signals," "Dark Wind," and others. One reviewer complained about the lack of action, but a great deal is happening and changing, especially in Benny and Dawn. And one thing, among many, that I learned is that important things happen slowly in Pueblo and Navajo homes.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsReally boring. I had to turn it off. Just no action whatsoever. No wonder the critics liked it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsTouching and moving and elegantly designed by Billy Luther in his first narrative feature. Based on Luther's experiences, what he put on film evoked many emotions. This film connected with me in a way that it should with most boys who didn't have a traditional up ringing. These characters are well designed and the idea not not subtitle certain things is brilliant. You're not going to know these actors and that works. The lack of polish brings an authenticity. The visuals are stunning, making up somewhat for a lack of words. I laughed, I thought, I cried. Despite it's familiarity, it's a pretty complete film. Final Score: 8.4/10
