Gangs of New York
audience Reviews
, 81% Audience Score- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThere have been issues stated, but the flow, the panorama, the acting are superb. I have qualms with the ending, but ending does not make the movie. The movie is an environment in which the actors live, and the environment is envelopping and the actors live within it. The history is accurate, remembering that the individuals are fictional. Actually my favorite Scorcese movie.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsWorth a watch for Scorsese fans, even if it's not one of his best. The chemistry between Leo and Cameron is hit-and-miss, while DDL's presence overshadows everything and everyone around him in every scene he's in...he's just too good to share a scene with. The story intrigues but is a tad disappointing with the way it ends.
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsToo tall a task, even for the great Martin Scorcese. Talented Cast and good scenes sprinkled throughout an absolute mess of a production. You don't need to be told it was a troubled shoot, it is painfully obvious. Drags terribly too often.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsUnbelievably poor! I have no idea how audiences found this remotely convincing. Presumably people with no connection with Ireland or the Irish whatsoever- the whole thing is a mess. Hokey accents, nonsensical plotting. A bit like a meal made of mouldy ingredients, I struggled to finish it. Utter rubbish.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA prequel film to the SCU (Scorsese Crimatic Universe). On paper, this film has the potential to be one of the greatest films of all time. While it doesn’t fully meet those lofty expectations, it’s still a fantastic historical epic set during a pivotal period for both New York City and America as a whole. Pairing Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio in a Martin Scorsese film is a promising formula, though Day-Lewis appears leagues above DiCaprio at this point in their careers. It has a strong and deep supporting cast, with actors like John C. Riley and Brendan Gleeson adding depth to characters with limited screen time. While it might have been hindered by the hype on release, it’s now a pleasant surprise for viewers just now discovering it.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsA scarcely credible 246 minutes and if DDL was in every scene it might be 5 stars but as much fun, outside his mesmeric multi faceted character and performance, can be had playing spot an English actor with a non speaking walk on. DDL's finest hour or should that be finest four hours and thats saying something. deCaprio showed in later films more of his craft but there wasn't much on show here, just brooding teen mag diet coke nonsense. Most of the other characters bar Jim Broadbent are almost NPC's. Is it a must watch? 100%. Is it fatally flawed. Also yes.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA good movie but It is quite simply too long. It has a number of moments of being an epic film with a lot to offer the audience, the best of which is the performance from Daniel Day Lewis, which for me makes this entire movie. Casting a British actor to play a patriotic New Yorker could go one way or another, but it was perfection and he is simply exceptional as bill the butcher. DDL’s performance is easily the most engaging aspect of this movie, he brings this complex villain to life on a way no other actor could come close to. I struggled with the poor Irish accents from both Leo and Diaz, this hindered the experience. Whilst there was some stunning casting in this movie, DDL, Gleeson etc - there was also some big misses I felt.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsPossibly the most boring movie I've ever watched. I don't require a movie to be fast paced, but my God this was excruciatingly slow. With Scorcese directing and such a great cast, I obviously missed something that many others found intriguing?
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsThis film is genius. It is well directed and the two stars of the film are absolutely amazing. The dialogue is amazing, the plot is amazing, the acting is mostly amazing, and the visual style is great except for a few mistakes. This movies two biggest issues are some weird and unnecessary flashbacks that are super annoying and strange, the other major issue is Cameron Diaz's character. Her character doesn't add much to the plot, has bad lines, and doesn't change much through the movie, she is just kinda boring and poorly acted. Ultimately this a genius historical epic and the performance by Daniel Day-Lewis is simply legendary.
