Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

Really enjoyed this. Super acting with fast-moving storyline and clever plot. You’ve seen these type of movies before but you’ll probably still love this one. Plus last half was actually pretty scary!

A bunch of very annoying kids film themselves doing annoying stuff for half an hour then walk through an old building with the female members of the cast screaming without cessation. Not a single attempted scare until half way through the movie. I actually fell asleep watching it. No idea what the hype was about. One of the most annoying things I’ve ever seen. Please don’t bother.

AB INS SPUKHAUS, WAS SOLL SCHON PASSIEREN? Eine Gruppe von Leuten will im stillgelegten Gonjiam Krankenhaus auf Geistersuche gehen. Denn angeblich stirbt jeder der in das Zimmer 402 eintreten will. Die Influencer von Horror Times wollen die 1. Million Klicks bei einem Livestream erreichen, doch schnell wird Ihnen klar irgendwas ist da drinnen und es macht bereits Jagd auf sie. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum von 2018 geht ca. 94 Minuten und ist ab 16 Jahren freigegeben. Wir haben hier eine Horror-Mysterie Geschichte über eine Gruppe von Leuten, die eigentlich nicht an Geister sondern ans liebe Geld glauben. Doch unerwarteteweise müssen sie feststellen das es in diesem Gebäude wohl wirklich spukt, besonders als sich die ersten verletzten und verschwinden. Im Found-Footage Stil gedreht erleben wir eine Geschichte die man schon duzente Male gesehen hat. Daher ist es wenig überraschend welchen Verlauf dieser Streifen nimmt, aber immerhin gab es kaum gewackel. Ein paar nette Jumpscares und einige Hinter-dir-ist-etwas Momente nach dem anderen machen dennoch Spaß. Die Figuren selbst sind weder besonders interessant und man fragt sich eigentlich nur wer zu erst drauf gehen wird. Eine gute Grund Stimmung wird aufgrund des Schauplatzes dennoch geboten und wirklich langweilig ist es nie, auch wenn man weiss was passiert. Das Finale bietet unheimliche Bilder, sehr viel Geschrei und vorallem Geister die zwar cool sind aber Geräusche machen wie ich wenn ich zu heißes Essen im Mund habe, was zu unfreiwilliger Komik führt. Am Ende bleibt ein Werk das man sich in tiefer Nacht mal geben kann um sich ein wenig zu gruseln. Wirklich vom Hocker dürfte man hier nicht gerissen werden, aber kurzweilige Unterhaltung gibt es dennoch. Von mir bekommt der Film 6/10 Punkten. Schauspielerisch ist das natürlich typisch asiatisch übertrieben, damit muss man bei solchen Filmen leider leben.

Highly derivative of other found footage films and featuring largely generic characters, yet exceptionally effective nonetheless. What the film lacks in depth and originality, it makes up for with an abundance of well-constructed scares, strong acting, and solid pacing. Definitely worth a watch if you like found footage horror. Just don't expect anything particularly new or surprising.

I'm not the biggest fan of the found footage genre but this was good! Laughed a little at one point but really well done overall.

Found footage horror movies aren't necessarily a new concept at this point in time, but using a real location as the inspiration for "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum" does make the film feel original. This movie has a good amount of setup which leads to an intense and terrifying finale. I watched this movie with a group of friends and genuinely think it would have been too scary for my taste otherwise. I do like how the movie has some mysterious elements, but I also felt it could have dived more into backstories of whatever presence was attacking the characters in the movie and felt more interesting from a story perspective. Nonetheless, I think the movie is fully functional as a thrill ride and has everything horror fanatics would want from a movie like this. Overall, it is a scary, unsettling, and engaging movie that kept me creeped out and was fun to watch with a large group.

I think the "found footage" genre played itself out a long time ago, and for a while I thought this was just another "young people doing stupid things" horror movie. But at the midway point the movie produces some genuinely frightening images. There are enough of those to recommend the film.

Found footage horror isn't a new sub-genre, but it's difficult to find films that do anything new with the concept. Gonjiam:HA doesn't really go anywhere fresh and it is a little clumsy in some really important places, but it's generally quite a good attempt. The setting does the majority of the heavy lifting; an abandoned asylum is obviously a creepy environment, so the storytelling and the set-pieces are already massively enabled by that context. Visually it's impressive and the performances are fairly convincing, but, as is the case with most horror, it largely loses its footing in the final act and fails to deliver the punch it spent much of the film promising. Decent, if not at all remarkable.
