I Don't Understand You

Outrageously snappy and unapologetically fun, I Don’t Understand You is a must-see for anyone who likes queer romance, horror-comedy, and/or hot Italians.

Emotional honesty sometimes salvages this tonal misfire but can’t quite pull together a movie that is constantly coming apart with bad screenwriting choices and direction that never figures out how to tell this quirky story.

Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells make such an effortlessly funny and convincing couple that they smooth over the rough transitional patches.

Tonally, “I Don’t Understand You” has the twisted, expect-the-worst vibe of classic Danny DeVito movies (“Ruthless People” and “The War of the Roses” come to mind).

...the film which devolves into an insipid and unbelievably offensive mess....I have no issue with gays being portrayed as monstrous, especially in black comedies. But I do take issue with Italian characters being presented as silly and expendable.

The film’s issues are all small, though, and if you love to laugh while cringing, “I Don’t Understand You” will give you all you can eat.

Enjoyment of I Don’t Understand You’s second half depends entirely on suspension of disbelief since taking any piece of the storyline seriously won’t lead to a positive experience.

It’s refreshing to see a film that doesn't punish gay characters for being bad, and the fact that those characters are prospective parents dealing with all the fraught emotions that process entails is just blood-spatter on the Cannoli cake.

An Italian nightmare of hilarity and uncertainty, I Don’t Understand You is a sharp, witty horror comedy carried by Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells’ tight comedic chemistry.
