Seul contre tous (1998) The Sick Mind of a Loser (11,722 – 27 May 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In 1939, a boy is born is Paris and two years later, his father and his mother die. When he is a young teenager, he works hard as a butcher and when he is thirty years old, he buys a butcher shop of his own. After having sex with a worker, she has a baby and abandon her. He raises the girl that is mute, and when she has her first period, he believes she was raped by a man. He hunts down the man and stabs his face. He is arrested and his daughter is sent to an institution. He loses his shop and his apartment as consequence. He works at a bar and impregnates the owner. She sells her business and moves to Lille to live with her mother to open a butcher shop. However, she changes her mind and he works as nightwatchman of a rest home. When an old patient dies, the Butcher starts to think about his life and returns to Paris. Without money and completely disturbed by his pointless life, he questions morality and justice and brings his daughter to his hotel room to say goodbye. “Seul contre tous” (1998), a.k.a. “I Stand Alone”, is a strange movie by Gaspar Noé with the story that discloses the sick mind of a loser. Butcher, the lead character, is a lonely man completely disturbed that practically does not talk to anybody. Self-destructive, he questions morality and justice for the poor and the rich and sexually abuses of his daughter. The plot is unpleasant but worthwhile watching for the fans of this French director. Noe is something of an over-rated edgelord hack. There's nothing really philosophical or profound here despite its vague pretences of being something more than gritty pulp sleaze. It's not even particularly entertaining.

An intense watch that offers a brutally nihilistic story of a man down on his luck. Gaspar Noe's debut film.

First viewing I really disliked the way it didn't flinch from abhorrent crimes and I deleted it. Yet this haunted me and I had to return for the same reason. What makes a person barbaric? Well, this film will tell you, somewhat, but it will not offer hope or solution, which should make you angry. Not angry with the movie, however, which is stylistically brilliant and effective, angry with that truth of no hope or solution.

I usually don't like narration in movies. I think it detracts from - and often ruins - the story. The fact that I like this movie so much is a testament to Noe's excellent script since it is pretty much narrated from beginning to end (as is the fact that the main character is wholly unsympathetic).

What a waste of my time as it started out okay, but I began to get lost with lagging subtitles. After the first 30 minutes, it went downhill with no action - just mental dialog! I sorta tuned out and hurried through it.

"one of the most disturbing films"? more like one of the most depressing films. it's on the wrong list & was quite boring on top of it. i've tried some Gaspar Noe films in the past & i keep giving him more chances to surprise me, but i'm just not a fan apparently. the only thing interesting about this one is the sharp camera work, which i did enjoy. the narration just doesn't do it for me i guess - i wasn't attached to the characters or the story - so it didn't really make me feel anything besides saying "good grief" to myself a couple times.

A classic Noe movie... Cinematographically sustaining and dialogues are engrossing. If you're alike Noe's style you'll enjoy this movie too.

I watched this movie solely based on the fact that it was a Gaspar Noe film. As a big of fan of some of his other films I gave this one a shot. It was... weird... but good. Its a social commentary by a down on his luck butcher who is broke and alone and jobless. The movies spews all his rambling thoughts and diatribes. It so unique though that it's hard to look away. It's definitely not for everyone, but for those that like weird films out of left field, give this a shot.
