Incendies
audience Reviews
, 92% Audience Score- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsThis film is incredibly immersive; I spent most of it believing that the cities, wars, and political figures were actually real, surrounding the main fictional story. Of course, this is not the case! Apparently a lot of the film was inspired by various conflicts, but the attention to detail and complex plot really lend a sense of realism. The story itself is equally engaging. It’s sort of a mystery film, but not in the way that you’re just watching to get to the next big reveal; more so, you’re just along for the powerful, heart-wrenching ride, equal parts excited for and dreading whatever will come next. The very last twist felt just a tiny bit over the top, but at least the film really wrings out from it every bit of emotional turmoil that it can. Lubna Abazel gives an incredible performance: nuanced, emotional, and real. Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin also has some really impressive scenes. Denis Villenueve is directing here, though you won’t find much of his signature Dune or Blade Runner styles in this film. Tight shots on characters balanced with wide shots of smoldering desert cities lead to a beautiful sense of isolation and discovery. Emotional connections are made even more palpable by the parallels between shots in the past and present. Incendies is a beautiful film that is very difficult to watch. Be prepared for some very real-world trauma in this fictional landscape.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsI was left shocked. The narrative is great and the acting too. Felt kinda long but very much worth it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars"This is the first time I've been truly impressed and shocked by a movie. You know, people usually say things like, 'Watch this movie, you'll be shocked.' But it’s not usually like that. However, this movie truly deserves respect."
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis film is an uncompromising masterpiece. While long, it deftly engages many topics related to the harrowing morass of war and the complexities of motherhood and family. I was surprised and impressed by how much material was covered in so little time. I believe it was in part due to the powerful, quiet scenes that allow one to see and feel without being directed by dialogue. What we imagine on our own is always so much more vast that what we are told directly in film. Lubna Azabal is amazing in this role.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsIt takes its time. It’s an excellent film, with a slow pace that ultimately works in its favor. One of the most memorable endings in the history of cinema…

- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsDespite the shocking ending, "Incendies" is not rewarding enough to compensate for the 130 minutes that it drags on.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsAn unusual film to say the least. A Canadian film showing a refugee from Iran going back to learn about her bizarre and complicated family history. Despite the unique plot, it still left me questioning and frustrated. It was interesting to see their views on Iranian culture. I saw it since it was on the IMDB 250 list. It was on tubi.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsWhile the subject manner is heavy, Villeneuve balances the intense drama with moments of quiet beauty, with the stark landscapes that provide a striking backdrop to the character's emotional journey in this raw, gut-wrenching war commentary film that is Incendies.
